After being born as an experimental project appropriating electronic improvisation through live coding, co(n)de Zero finally releases a formal album, since he had previously presented his work only through individual online tracks and some video performances and a couple of EPs on Bandcamp. This music and sounds have been generated in a constant flow started in 2015 when I came to live in Sheffield (UK), to start a PhD in electroacoustic composition at the University of this city. For this academic purpose, the University of Sheffield and the north of England in general are a privileged placewith many spaces for this type of artistic creation and research, with outstanding professors and laboratories in various universities. In addition, this area and the UK in general are a zone of great tradition in various musical genres and especially in electronic music. In fact, Sheffield, with a great history in rock and pop, is one of the important cities for electronic music, cradle of the Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, the Warp label among other names and currently has a great techno and DJ scene with festivals like No Bounds and labels like CPU and Computer Club.

Being in contact with this medium was refreshing and essentially allowed me to imbue myself with the Algorave and live coding scene, of which Sheffield is one of the most important epicentres. Thus, through concerts and workshops, co(n)de Zero was born, an electronic improvisation project using live coding, merging post-techno, ambient and experimental aspects.

This album was composed entirely in Sheffield, city and its people to whom it is dedicated. All tracks were improvised with Tidal Cycles controlling samples and synthesis in SuperCollider and external synths as well, with the exception of one which was composed as a deferred editing and montage process, using materials generated in previous improvisations…

Composed, produced, mixed and mastered by Alejandro Albornoz aka co(n)de Zero at the University of Sheffield Sound Studios between the end of 2015 and February 2019. Reviewed in 2020.

Track 03 “v1-pt” & track 04 “International girls” include various vocal samples recorded during studio sessions by Mathilde Rioton, Natalie Verhaegen, Lucy Haighton & Heather Morgan.

Track 06 “Grey sky” contains processed samples of oboe improvisations performed by Marion Walker.
